Description
Dutch Alley is another location that I hold dear to my heart. When I first moved to New Orleans, the French Market was all open air, and there was a gravel road/ parking area behind it. When my friend Diana and I drove here, we parked there, and used it as a place to meet if we became separated. Wed buy pastries from the marvelous French bakery across the street, or coffee and beignets from Morning Call, or French bread and flavorful cheeses from the A & P, and head up to the riverbank to enjoy.
I left and returned to find so much had changed. The market was now enclosed stores, and you couldnt park, or even drive, on my little road. It was now called Dutch Alley (perhaps after mayor Earnest Dutch Morial), and had its own brand of charm.
Mask maker Mike (Stark) and Carol from the French Market Corporation, started the annual Mardi Gras Mask Market in Dutch Alley, (which I sold feather creations in), and the location seemed magical! There are several other events held there, throughout the year, now, and the alley houses a local artist co-op.
I recently went to the Mississippi River bank to photograph cloud formations, and it began raining, so I quickly left. As I ran past Dutch Alley, I had to stop to photograph the brilliant reflections on the slate pavement, knowing I would paint a picture while they still danced vibrantly in my mind. I considered adding people, or perhaps a cat or dog, but decided to leave it untouched. In the back of my mind, I envisioned another painting, or a remarked giclee, with an addition of someone wandering in the rain.

Thank you Sharon. It is near the Mississippi River, and is often bustling, and full of people and activity. This day, as the rain began, it was, indeed, peaceful!
