DICHOTOMY SERIES by Beverly Boulet Creative spirits enjoy a symbiotic relationship with New Orleans; they are attracted by the romance, beauty and mystery of the city, and that aura of mystique is augmented by their very presence. New Orleans is a city of contradictions: beauty and inelegance, religious obsession and flaunted sin, oppression and freedom, traditional and contemporary architecture, opulence and poverty, uncultured and genteel personage. The dichotomy is celebrated and expressed through poetry, music, painting, sculpture, and all of the arts. In return, artists are afforded the freedom and lifestyle acceptance needed to pursue their craft. My recent paintings have included the opposites of other types... colors, temperatures, movement, etc., hence I have dubbed them my dichotomy series. Some have male and female forms, hot and cool colors -perhaps complimentary ( opposite on the color wheel) - and other sets of opposites, such as light and dark, up and down, backwards and forwards, or in and out which make their appearance, as well. noun, plural dichotomies division into two mutually exclusive, opposed, or contradictory groups: division into two parts, kinds, etc.; subdivision into halves or pairs. Dichotomy should always refer to a division of some kind into two groups. It is sometimes used to refer to a puzzling situation which seems to involve a contradiction.
