Painting - Pastel On Wood
Description
he Jean Lafitte Blacksmith Shop, now a bar,is one of New Orleans most famous and historic buildings. Located at the corner of Bourbon and Saint Philip Streets, it is also a great place to people watch.
This large pastel depicts costumed Mardi Gras Indians marching to their own beat, and lucky bar patrons viewing the passing parade. The original is a pastel painting on birch plywood, that was coated with river sand.
The tradition of dressing as Indians, using West African, and Native American ritual dress, is usually accented by call and response chants, accompanied by percussion instruments.
This painting won a merit award at the 2015 French Quarter Fest Pirates' Alley Art Show, hosted by the New Orleans Art Association.
