Artist's Description

Painting of saxophonist playing earnestly, in a famous courtyard in New Orleans' French Quarter.

I photographed many places - homes, businesses, inner courtyards - on Royal Street in the 1980s, with the intention of using some of them as references for painting. This particular location was called the Brulatour Courtyard, named for a previous resident. It was the meeting place for the historic Arts and Crafts Club for many decades. Recently the courtyard has been restored, and the property now houses a museum for the Historic New Orleans Collection.
The arch and stairway of this home have been depicted many times, by various artists, because of its haunting beauty.

I, personally, enjoy painting people, and New Orleans musicians in particular. I chose this courtyard as a backdrop for a painting I had in mind, because it shows a New Orleans hidden to the street. One has to walk through a carriageway to see the beauty offered. Fountains, banana trees, flowers and other...

Beverly Boulet

Louisiana born artist Beverly Boulet began art studies at age four, and, luckily, had art classes all through elementary and high school, plus Summer art camps. She studied fashion design at West Virginia University, and continued her art education with workshops by noted portrait artists, including John Howard Sanden, Daniel Greene, and Foster Caddell. Ms. Boulet began painting murals and portraits in the early 1970�s at the Maryland and New Jersey beaches, and continued to do so upon returning to New Orleans in 1980. She has painted, literally, thousands of portraits in water media, pastel, and oils, which grace public and private collections internationally.
