Artist's Description

I saw Ruthie the first day I came to New Orleans; "That's the duck girl!" Later she was called "the duck lady" Everyone had stories about her: ducks followed her around; she'd been on "Johnny Carson"; some people knew her as a child; people stole her ducks (to protect them from being hit by cars) and took them to City Park. Over the years I accumulated my own Duck Lady stories. I don't smoke, but she'd always start conversatons with "got a cigarette?" She sat for several portraits.... some of which I gave to her. This oil painting is derived from a photo shoot when she posed in my chair with a stuffed duck; she had no live ones following her around at that time. She was quite a character, and New Orleans is a sadder place without her presence.

About Beverly Boulet

Beverly Boulet

Louisiana born artist Beverly Boulet began art studies at age four, and, luckily, had art classes all through elementary and high school, plus Summer art camps. She studied fashion design at West Virginia University, and continued her art education with workshops by noted portrait artists, including John Howard Sanden, Daniel Greene, and Foster Caddell. Ms. Boulet began painting murals and portraits in the early 1970s at the Maryland and New Jersey beaches, and continued to do so upon returning to New Orleans in 1980. She has painted, literally, thousands of portraits in water media, pastel, and oils, which grace public and private collections internationally. She has, also, exhibited and garnered awards in group and juried shows,...
