Description
The Jean Lafitte Blacksmith Shop, now a bar on Bourbon Street, is a favorote subject for me, and many other artists. It is supposed to be the (or one of the) oldest barrooms in America. Stories tell of it being, prior to transformation to a bar, the pirate's blacksmith shop, and perhaps a place they stashed hidden booty from ships they pillaged. The building is also purported to be haunted.
This small (for me) painting, 16"x20", was begun as a demonstration for the Jefferson Art Guild. Painted predominately with painting knives, the demo was to show the use of unusual utensils as well as traditional paint applicators. I used spatulas, spoons, plastic cards, and pallete knives to apply the paint to the canvas. It was such a fun experiment.
The demonstration was only for an hour, so the painting was in its beginning stages when I stopped.
Six months later I brought it out to complete it.
I was enthralled by aqua and peach sunrises observed in early Spring this year, so that was the inspiration for the vibrant color scheme used.
